GAME OVERVIEW

RuneQuest: Warlords throws you right into Glorantha—a world that’s wild, packed with myth, and honestly, unlike anywhere else. You’re not just some nameless general. You’re a warlord, desperate to keep your tribe alive while chaos pours in from every corner. You get armies at your command—sure, you’ve got regular troops, but there are also heroes, monsters, and rune-charged units, all fighting in their own way.

The game kicks off in Glorantha’s cube-shaped world, hemmed in by the Sramake’s River, where ancient floods still leave their mark. It’s the year 1608 (or 7/37, if you’re counting the local way), and the Talastar Tribes are in trouble. Chaos comes crashing in from Dorastor, and you’re right in the thick of it as Hahlgrim, champion of the Bilings.

He’s got to rally allies—elves, and even some uneasy Lunar Empire friends—just to survive. Across 18 missions, you’ll see alliances form and fall apart, watch betrayals unfold, and get swept up in all-out war. Battles play out on grid maps where every tile matters. Each unit projects a Zone of Control, so enemies can’t just stroll past without thinking. Action Points run the show—you spend them to move, attack, or cast spells. Heroes get more AP, letting them pull off sneaky flanks or unleash crazy magic. There’s a lot happening—runes, spirit magic, sorcery, sentry mode, opportunity attacks, counter-hits. Every turn feels like a new puzzle, where smart positioning makes all the difference.

You’ve got three factions: Talastar, Chaos, and the Lunar Empire. Each one packs loads of unique unit types. Units aren’t just a single piece—they can have up to seven individual models, each with their own health, which makes fights feel gritty and unpredictable.

You’ll field everything from Chieftains, Howlers, and Centurions to spellcasters like Stormwalkers and Broo Shamans. Each faction’s got its own vibe. You can bring in heavy bruisers, artillery, monsters, cavalry, skirmishers, even hybrid warriors like Shadowcats and Broo Marauders. There’s always a fresh way to attack or defend.

Magic is a huge deal here and it’s all about Glorantha’s ancient runes. Heroes bond with runes, unlocking wild abilities linked to the gods. Some spells are instant, others stick around and chew through your resources. Cult Rune Magic gives heroes exclusive moves that can turn a fight or stack buffs for the long haul. Getting the hang of rune magic is key if you want to win.

When you’re not deep in the campaign, jump into stand-alone tactical battles across different maps, each with its own twists. The Competitive Arena lets you mess around, test new tactics, and battle other players no matter which faction you like best. With so many unit types, magic tricks, and different identities for each faction, every match feels fresh. You have to adapt, keep thinking, and squeeze every last bit of power out of Glorantha’s rune-fueled chaos.

Once The RuneQuest Warlords is downloaded, right-click the .zip file and select “Extract to RuneQuest Warlords ”(You’ll need 7-Zip for this, get it here).
Open the RuneQuest Warlords folder and run the exe application.
Have a blast playing! Remember to run the game as administrator. If you get any missing dll errors, check for a Redist or _CommonRedist folder and install all the programs in there.
