Legacy of Kain: Ascendance drops you straight into classic, fast-paced action, bringing the franchise back after more than twenty years.

Crystal Dynamics teamed up with Bit Bot Media to release it yesterday, March 31, 2026. It’s a prequel to Soul Reaver, blending old-school pixel-art gameplay with cool anime-style cutscenes and some throwback 3D moments that feel like the PS1 days.

What really sets it apart is the voice cast. They brought back the originals—Simon Templeman as Kain, Michael Bell as Raziel—so the “quasi-Shakespearean” dialogue hits with real authenticity. You get to switch between different characters, each with their own totally unique playstyle. Responding

Kain’s got brute vampiric force. Raziel shifts between his human Sarafan knight form and his early vampire self. And then there’s Elaleth, a newcomer who’s all about aggression.

When you dive into the world, you’re jumping between collapsing kingdoms and spooky, haunted ruins. The levels look beautiful in pixel art, and they’re constantly flipping between puzzle-solving and intense combat.

The combat is wild—you string together melee attacks, dash around using supernatural powers, and tap into vampiric abilities. Everything’s built for fast, vertical movement, so you’re always on your toes.

The soundtrack stands out, too. Celldweller (Klayton) did the score, mixing industrial synths that make the gothic atmosphere feel fresh but still dark.

And if you’re a longtime fan, you’ll love the narrative bits—lots of lore-heavy scenes told through “Throwback 3D” segments. They really dig deep into Nosgoth’s history, rewarding anyone who’s stuck with the series.
