GAME OVERVIEW
“Undead Realm: Ego” is a live-action horror game where you play as Ren Xing, a guy who wakes up in a mysterious school and meets other survivors together, you’ll try to escape while uncovering the dark truth behind the school’s story. As you progress your choices and actions will affect the outcome of the game.
“Undead Realm: Ego” is my third full-motion video (FMV) game, following “Try and Love” and “Back.” Big thanks to everyone who’s supported me and my previous games. And a warm welcome to anyone checking out my FMV games for the first time. Builders of Egypt
I gotta give a huge shoutout to the cast and crew who worked tirelessly during the shooting of this game. We filmed in an abandoned school out in the middle of nowhere, with no water or electricity, in freezing temperatures. It was brutal, but we pushed through it all, pulling all-nighters to get everything done. The actors were total pros – they were working in short sleeves and skirts while I was bundled up in a down jacket trying to stay warm. It wasn’t easy, but we made it happen. I won’t say “Undead Realm: Ego” is the best FMV out there, but I can say that my team is probably the hardest-working group in indie game filmmaking.
“Try and Love” was my first shot at an FMV game, and honestly, I’d probably rate it a 2 or 3 out of 10. I was just experimenting and trying something new. “Back” was my first horror FMV, and I’d give that one a 6, at most. For “Undead Realm: Ego,” I’d say it’s about a 6.5. The extra half point goes to the cast and crew for their hard work, and to me, for trying some new filming styles.
Look, everyone wants to make a game that gets an 8 or above, and that’s what I was aiming for when I started this project. But the reality is, writing a solid script is tough, and if it was easy, good scripts wouldn’t be so rare. I originally had a much bigger story for “Undead Realm: Ego,” but my budget just couldn’t cover it. The bigger the story, the more time and money you need to shoot it. More time means more costs, and that’s a real struggle when you’re working with a tight budget.
Speaking of money, things haven’t been easy on the financial side. “Try and Love” didn’t do so well, and I kind of expected that since it wasn’t up to par. Then, for “Back,” I did a giveaway to make up for “Try and Love” not hitting the mark. Even though “Back” is still kind of in the red, it’s doing a bit better now. But after all that, there just wasn’t much money left to make a new game.
