DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake takes the classics that kicked off the JRPG genre and gives them a fresh coat of paint—one that looks just as stunning as the end of the Erdrick Trilogy.

Square Enix and ARTDINK dropped this collection on October 30, 2025, and honestly, it’s wild how they turned those old 8-bit games into something that feels both nostalgic and brand new. The HD-2D style is all about crisp 3D environments mixed with gorgeous, detailed pixel art.

The core stories in Alefgard, and the legacy of Erdrick, are still there, but everything around them feels bigger. There’s new story content, a fully orchestrated score, and the gameplay’s been totally reworked. Pluto

They didn’t just update the graphics. Dragon Quest I now lets you fight groups of monsters at once instead of just single enemies. You get new multi-target spells and can find special ability scrolls as you explore. Dragon Quest II changes things up even more.

Now you can add a fourth party member—the Princess of Cannock—which shakes up party strategy in a big way. And with the new ability to dive your ship underwater, you can scour the ocean floor for sunken treasure, adding a whole new layer to exploration.

Square Enix isn’t done supporting the game, either. On March 9, 2026, they rolled out a big update (version 1.0.2.0). They took out the Denuvo anti-tamper tech on PC, made ships move faster in Dragon Quest II, and fixed an annoying bug with bonus items for players who had Dragon Quest III HD-2D saves on Steam Deck.

So, whether you’re coming back for a hit of nostalgia or jumping into Erdrick’s world for the first time, this remake is hands-down the best way to experience where the series began.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD

3. Once The DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is downloaded, right-click the .zip file and select “Extract to DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake ”(You’ll need 7-Zip for this, get it here).
4. Open the DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake folder and run the exe application.
5. Have a blast playing! Remember to run the game as administrator. If you get any missing dll errors, check for a Redist or _CommonRedist folder and install all the programs in there.
