GAME OVERVIEW
Retro survival horror is back, and it refuses to babysit you. Outbreak: Shades of Horror wears its love for ’90s and early 2000s survival horror right on its sleeve. The game mixes modern tech with that old-school, punishing difficulty—think limited inventory, tight resources, and the kind of challenge that doesn’t forgive careless mistakes.
If you’ve got a soft spot for awkward camera angles, tough-as-nails enemies, and constant, creeping dread, you’ll feel right at home. If not? Well, brace yourself. This nightmare doesn’t care if you’re ready.
Step into Cypress Ridge, a Midwestern city falling apart under the weight of a zombie apocalypse. It all kicks off in the local movie theater, Cypress Reel—a brief moment of safety before everything goes sideways. Pretty soon, you’re fighting for your life across a city that’s barely recognizable anymore. There are nine playable characters to choose from (with more on the way), and each one’s a shot at survival in a place that’s gone to hell overnight. Maya Ek Pishachini

Outbreak: Shades of Horror throws a lot at you, but it also gives you options. In the Early Access Sneak Peek, you get two main game modes plus a lineup of arcade-style mini-games, all through the Cypress Ridge Arcade. Go it alone or team up online with up to four players. Scavenge for supplies, keep your inventory in check, take down zombies with both guns and melee, and build up defenses to hold back the undead. You can even swap between first-person and third-person views anytime, so you decide how you want to stare down the horror.
Raid Mode drops you into nightmare landscapes stuffed with zombies, where you have to loot, fight, and push forward until you finally hit an evacuation point. The closer you get to escaping, the tougher the game gets. Invasion Mode flips things around—you have to defend your camp against endless waves of zombies. Set up your base, build defenses, and see how long you can last when the dead just keep coming.
When you need a break from the nonstop tension, Cypress Reel has your back. Drop by Ferret’s Emporium to unlock new weapons, skins, and a ridiculous number of outfit combos for your character. Looking for something quick? The arcade is packed with short, challenging mini-games—boss fights, escape rooms, you name it—that test your reflexes and nerve. You can tweak the difficulty, too, so there’s always a fresh challenge waiting.
The game doesn’t stop there. Dive into Chromatic Split Enhanced Edition, an expanded prologue that sets up the story with new weapons and mechanics. Or try Trials of Hank, a wild side campaign that dials up the action and rooftop chaos. Both stories flesh out Cypress Ridge and its cast, giving you even more reasons to care—and more ways to get scared.
Seasonal events and special challenges keep things interesting, starting with Halloween-themed content and crossovers. There are daily, weekly, and monthly goals, so you’ve always got something new to chase and rewards to earn. Outbreak: Shades of Horror mashes up retro fear with modern ambition, serving up a brutal survival ride for anyone willing to brave the nightmare.
