Dead Format throws you into 1990s Scotland, right in the middle of a personal nightmare. Your brother goes missing after falling deep into this weird, cursed VHS format, and what starts as a desperate search turns into something much bigger—secret tapes, warped realities, even whispers of a government cover-up that refuses to stay dead.

Your apartment is home base. Honestly, it’s the only spot that even pretends to be safe. Here, you piece the mystery together, stash whatever supplies you can find, and try to psych yourself up for another round. The TV in your living room is your portal; pop in a VHS tape, and you get yanked straight into another world—each one stranger and scarier than the last.

Everything in Dead Format is made just for this game—even the VHS footage, which is all recorded and edited by Chris Evry (aka Katanalevy), the solo Scottish developer behind the whole thing. Dunjungle

Every tape is its own twisted movie. One might shove you into a silent film nightmare, another goes full-on Italian giallo, and then there’s the grimy 80s body horror. Each world has its own rules, its own flavor of dread, and you never really know what you’ll be up against until you’re right there, in the thick of it.

Staying alive means searching every corner for supplies, grabbing key items, and solving puzzles while dodging or fighting whatever crawls out of the woodwork. Even the weapons and tools fit the theme of each film world, so every fight feels like you’re trapped inside the tape.

As you dig deeper, you start to find these homemade VHS clips that make you question where the fiction ends and the truth begins. Bit by bit, the real story behind your brother’s disappearance comes out. The only place you can save your progress is back at your apartment, which means finding shortcuts and new routes is the only way to hang onto your hard-won progress.

Every new tape throws fresh enemies, puzzles, and hidden areas at you, so you’re always on your toes—learning enemy habits, figuring out when to stand your ground and when to just run for it, all while the tension just keeps building.

He’s got a reputation for making dark, gothic, and seriously unsettling games, and this one is no exception. Dead Format mixes old-school horror vibes with modern survival mechanics to create something that sticks with you—whether you want it to or not.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD

Once The Dead Format is downloaded, right-click the .zip file and select “Extract to Dead Format ”(You’ll need 7-Zip for this, get it here).
Open the Dead Format folder and run the exe application.
